Deafness


What is Deafness?

Deafness is the result of damage to any part of the ear and means that a person has some difficulty hearing sounds. The degree of hearing loss depends on the severity of the damage.

What are the characteristics of Deafness?

There are a number of different reasons why someone might be Deaf or lose their hearing. These include:


The greatest difficulties faced by Deaf people are related to problems of language acquisition and the development of a communication system.

Is there a treatment to arrest the progression of Deafness?

In some cases hearing loss is temporary, while in other circumstances the damage may be permanent. Depending on the type of hearing loss, treatment can include medication (to treat infection), surgery and hearing aids. Other people use lip-reading and sign language techniques.
